WTF Identity:
Failure To Perfect
Atychiphobia: An intense fear of failure. It may cause you to put off or avoid any activity or scenario that has the potential for an unsuccessful outcome.
When you think about the precautions you take, the “safe” or “practical” decisions, do they ever come off as harmful or inhibiting to you?
A person will hold themselves back from potential success by refusing to welcome the ability to fail. An unspoken issue fueled by the desire to become who you envision without the necessary journey we often forget; why is it that we do that? I think the answer to that is obvious, the real question is how do we fix it, and to be honest, I’m still figuring that out too. What I do know is that these practical decisions are the ones we should be fearful of, the idea of idle comfort is terrifying, one worse than failure.
I don’t know about you, but personally, I have found myself putting off certain ideas, projects and even job applications for the sole and only purpose being the feeling (or fear) of not being ready yet. Let me rephrase that so it sounds as real as it is; I put off and push away the very opportunities and experiences that I need in fear of not knowing enough to feel qualified, not being able to answer every single question or solve every issue in that field or subject before even considering the possibility of taking it on. For not being perfect…see how inhibiting that can get?
Now, I’m sure this is a common and very obvious subject but how many of us avoid failure simply because we’re scared of it or how it makes us feel? I mean discouragement is no welcoming emotion. In my opinion, it’s the equivalent of being avoidant in opening your banking app because you worry you’re going to see a balance or charge you don’t want to; but hey, it’s there anyways. And yes! Ignorance is bliss, but knowledge is power; so you learn about it, inform yourself on those confusing terms, learn financial management and proper investment techniques so you KNOW what you’re doing, then guess what? It loses its power in feeling dreadful. You dive headfirst into what you’re scared of (exhilarating right?) and it loses its power to cage you in comfort, I want you to understand that that’s what comfort is.…a cage
One last thing to you, despite my title and what was covered on the idea of perfection itself. I want to make it perfectly clear that perfection is indeed a myth and impossible for any human being to accomplish. So, you can demand perfection or you can accept human reality. But before you go expecting the impossible of yourself, I urge you to first ask yourself what that means, and choose the latter, it makes all the difference.
A deeper dive into the unforgiving force fed idea of perfection coming soon, along with the last category introduction post.
Thank you for your very valuable time. 🙂
